REVIEW

Several months ago one of my readers left me a message to try out Chillipadi Mamak at Kensington. Based on several comments that I have read, CM serves prata that is hot off the stove and made on the spot. Not only that, they have many authentic and flavoursome Malaysian cuisines available. Sounds tempting? Follow me!We were in for a late dinner on a Sunday night and if I remembered correctly, we were the only patrons! The staff was prompt in delivering the menu and taking our orders. Courteous at all times, even though they were finishing up for the day. After browsing through the colourful and detailed menu, ย we decided to go with two entrees and mains respectively.

First up, we had Loh Bak, kind of our must have dish at all the Malaysian restaurants so far. The ones here were rather disappointing as the skin was over fried and detaching from the filling even before you could put it in your mouth. The chicken filling was also dry and tasteless. The dipping sauce was just the normal sweet chilli that one could get from the supermarkets.

Next, we had the famous Roti Prata with two different curries for you to dip in! NICE. The prata was indeed different from the frozen ones available everywhere else, it was more fluffy and crispier at the same time. You just could not stop at one!

As for mains, we tried Sweet and Sour Fish which had a rather balanced flavour and a decent portion to match.

Lastly, we had Hainanese Chicken Rice which was something that I have been eagerly wanting to try. Somehow things just don’t taste as good as I expected them to be. The rice was ‘soaking’ in the soya sauce which made it soggy and rather unappetizing. The soup was bland except for those few pieces of shallots put in. Chilli sauce was just sweet chilli and not spicy enough, thus not providing the ‘kick’ that it should. As for the chicken, it was interesting that it was served in a roll with stuffing! However, the chicken was not tender enough nor was it flavoursome at all! I was utterly disappointed, having to travel the distance and not enjoy my favourite dish. @.@

The prata was indeed different and nicer than the normal ones available on the market. But the rest of the dishes were a far cry from what I have expected. ย Or simply because I am too picky. Hmmmm.
